Description:
A pair of elegant mid-20th century iron garden armchairs executed in the neoclassical tradition and stylistically reminiscent of the work of Maison Baguès. The slender wrought iron frames feature sculptural curves, sabre-form rear legs, and distinctive oval medallion backs composed of vertical rods. A turned brass spindle accent spans the crest rail, lending a subtle note of refinement and contrast to the otherwise restrained metalwork.
The chairs balance classical inspiration with the lightness of mid-century terrace furniture. Their airy construction and circular stretcher base evoke the relaxed sophistication of Mediterranean café seating from the Riviera and Northern Italy during the postwar period. Upholstered seat cushions in a black and white stripe provide graphic contrast while remaining sympathetic to the chairs’ architectural lines.
Suggested Placement:
Ideal for a garden terrace, conservatory, or sunroom. They also work beautifully flanking a small bistro table or styled as occasional seating in an entry or covered porch.
Condition Report:
Very good vintage condition with light oxidation and age-appropriate wear to the iron frames, consistent with outdoor use and age. The brass crest accents retain a warm patina. Frames are structurally sound and stable. Seat cushions show minor wear commensurate with age and present well.
