Description:
A compact English oak tavern table dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. Its broad single-plank top has developed a richly figured, deeply worn surface with softened edges and gentle undulation, resting above a plain apron and four slender ring-turned legs joined by a box stretcher. The expressive grain and evolved surface give the table a presence far beyond its modest footprint.
The base reflects the direct, architectural construction of early English vernacular furniture, with block-form joints, balanced turnings, traditional joinery, and rounded feet. Centuries of use remain legible throughout the oak in the form of old marks, tonal variation, abrasions, and historic repairs. An older repair follows a stress fracture extending across the single-board top, recording the natural movement of the timber over time.
Provenance: From a Park Avenue estate
Suggested Placement:
Ideal beside a low sofa or lounge chair, between a pair of club chairs, or as a sculptural drinks table in a library or entry. Its compact proportions also lend quiet authority to a bedside placement or a contemporary interior requiring the warmth of an early surface.
Condition Report:
Good antique condition with pronounced age-appropriate patina and surface wear. The single-plank top displays scratches, abrasions, old holes, open grain, small losses, and gentle undulation. A stress fracture extending across the board shows evidence of an older repair. Additional historic repairs remain visible, including a small metal reinforcement to one lower stretcher. These elements are consistent with the table’s considerable age and contribute to its singular character.
