Description:
Late 18th-century New England craftsmanship is captured in this finely proportioned Pembroke table, attributed to a New Bedford cabinetmaker, circa 1790–1800. Constructed of beautifully figured maple with a single drawer and tapered legs, the table embodies the restrained elegance of the Federal period. The gently warped top speaks to its age and authenticity.
Craftsmanship and Provenance:
This form is documented among regional examples held in museum collections, including a related piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This table was carefully hand-refinished to remove darkened later stain, revealing the clarity of the maple grain beneath a light French polish. A period brass drawer pull adds quiet refinement to its utilitarian grace.
Suggested Placement:
Ideal as a side or lamp table in a Federal or Shaker-inspired interior, or as an accent piece in a study, entryway, or bedroom where its historical simplicity can be appreciated up close. Historically, these were used for tea or a light meal.
Condition Report:
Excellent antique condition. Lightly refinished with a soft French polish revealing natural grain. Visible warp to the top consistent with age and long use; structurally stable with smooth operating drawer and intact leaves.
