Description:
A large-scale black-enameled cast iron amphora urn dating to the 19th/20th century, possibly American, conceived in a spare and unusually architectural Neoclassical idiom. The elongated ovoid body rises from a waisted stem to a broad circular foot, while tall rectilinear handles extend above the shoulders before terminating in subtle curled ends. A continuous Greek key band encircles the upper body, bringing graphic precision to the otherwise restrained silhouette.

Its strength lies in this severity of form. Rather than the florid decoration typically associated with cast iron garden ornament, the urn has an almost archaeological presence—dark, attenuated, and sculptural, with areas of worn black enamel revealing warmer iron tones beneath. The substantial scale gives it the authority of an architectural fragment while remaining narrow enough to integrate easily into an interior.

Suggested Placement:
Exceptional as a solitary floor object in an entry hall, beside a fireplace, at the end of a long console, or against a quiet plaster wall. Its graphic silhouette would be particularly effective in a contemporary interior or protected terrace where a single antique element can hold the space.

Condition Report:
Very good age-appropriate condition with considerable surface character. Scuffs, abrasions, losses to the black enamel, and areas of warm reddish oxidation are present throughout. Visible welded joins at the handle attachment points, as photographed. The varied surface and losses contribute to the urn’s strong architectural patina.
