A singular carved and assembled wooden dog sculpture by Canadian-born, American-based artist Joby Baker. Known as “Hardy,” the figure is modeled with an elongated muzzle, pendant ears, broad planted paws, and an exuberantly curling tail. Layered black paint gives the surface a deep, quietly variegated finish, while inset reflective eyes and the name HARDY incised into one flank lend the sculpture the intimacy of a personal portrait.

Acquired with provenance from the artist’s family, Hardy carries the directness and eccentric charm of a one-of-a-kind studio-made object. Visible joinery, hand-shaped contours, and gently irregular proportions give the sculpture an appealing folk immediacy, balanced by a distinctly modern silhouette. Baker worked across painting, sculpture, jewelry, and other media throughout his artistic career.

Suggested Placement:
